When against all odds Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and meets a colorful array of characters, including the resident dreamboat, Link; the ambitious mean girl, Amber; an African-American boy she meets in detention, Seaweed; and his mother, Motormouth Maybelle, the owner of a local record store. Tracy's mother is the indomitable Edna, and she eventually encourages Tracy on her campaign to integrate the all-white "Corny Collins Show."

Hairspray is one of my favorite musicals and to see Harvey Fierstein as Edna is always a treat.. HOWEVER, while the musical numbers are excellently performed, there are some technical flaws in the production that are difficult to overlook. The directing for television (on the technical side) is sloppy. Bad Lighting, audio dropouts and the like. The audio can be somewhat forgiven as it was originally presented live on television (though "Grease: Live" had some of the same issues and they at least corrected the audio) What bugs me about this production are some of the reworking of the story that creates some plot holes. I wish that they had spent the airtime on the actual story and not on Darrin Criss hosting segments that only serves to take the audience out of the show. Sadly, the Criss segments are included here. Hopefully there will be a revision or an "extras" version without these so the show can clow better. Criticisms aside, if you enjoy live TV musicals, this is a worthy add to your collection.. Especially if you never saw the show on stage.
