I love how Korra is strong headed, daring and reckless though she tries to do what's right. What I don't like is the love triangle. Doesn't make sense Bolin would forgive easily and there was no chemistry or development. The issue of benders oppressing non benders are good. It's an analogy of people who have abilities and attributes and others don't like some being athletic and others aren't athletic. Overall, it's a fine season although I didn't like the pacing towards the end. It feels rushed. And it didn't make sense Korra gained air bending powers from nothing. However I like how the loss of bending powers deals with grief and loss.
  • This book alone is a Masterpiece.

  • Aang is better than Korra

Note that I'm rating the show overall here, not just Season 1. This show has a really cool concept in a really cool world and I love that they extended the story past Avatar Aang. I also like that the characters in this spin-off are older than in the original Avatar show. And Mako is to die for. But what I really don't like about this show is the character of Korra herself. She gets worse as the show goes on, but she's a total hot-head, which causes her to make stupid, rash decisions, and it's really irritating. Aang was a way better avatar.

I’ll separate this review into one for the entire series then one for Book 1. Rather than simply continue with what worked in the original series, the creators of the Avatar universe have tried and succeeded at bringing something fresh while still retaining and expanding upon the story's core mythology. When you take into account these constraints, as well as making the show appeal to new and old viewers of many ages, the job they did was beyond amazing. Kids will miss some of the adult content and adults will think some bits are too childish, but it’s surprising how most of the content appeals to all ages. You will immediately notice that Korra is older than Aang and is a girl. You will also immediately notice the setting has evolved substantially. This was a very risky move and my hat’s off to the creators. The Legend of Korra is more about world-building than an overarching storyline. Some character development has been shifted from the main characters to the side characters. All these key differences bring about many variations in the story that make it feel fresh and distinct but the original series is not forgotten. Korra is Aang’s spiritual descendant and she works with his biological descendants. Thus, there are many goodies that pay homage to the original show. The production values have skyrocketed and is an area where The Legend of Korra clearly exceeds The Last Airbender. You can really see the power of animation. A world has been created that is so rich and vibrant, a live-action film would need a ridiculous budget to try and match it. The score and the voice acting are top-notch. I highly recommend this series for new and old viewers though you really want to watch The Last Airbender first. Now onto Book 1. This book serves as a terrific introduction and transitions old viewers to the evolved setting very comfortably. The story is surprisingly complex but there’s still a lot of fun stuff like pro-bending. Enjoy the phenomenal, underrated, villain. Book 1 is not as grandiose but it doesn’t need to be. It has subtle layers that can easily be missed. It stylishly executes the very important theme of equality in a manner fitting for all ages and continues to impress right up until the very end. An easy five stars.

The Avatar is the bridge between the human and the spirit world. This show is the bridge between TV for children and for adults. Its a fantastic tale filled with great messages. Fun for all ages with a little something for everyone. Action packed, comedy, beautiful animation.

I think that the Legend of Korra is one of the best American animated series of all time, and I really hope that both the creators and the network will continue exploring this rich universe. Thanks Nickelodeon for once again providing this high quality digital content to iTunes.
